Club Bee

HAGLEY & STOURBRIDGE BEEKEEPERS' ASSOCIATION

Julia Pigott will giving us a zoom presentation on "The Bees' need"

Wednesday 14 February 2024 at 7:30 pm

New Road Methodist Church

Julia has been interested in bees since early childhood and has kept honeybees since 1987. She usually has about a dozen hives and tries to keep below that number if possible because our honeybees compete with 'wild' bees for forage but - we all find beekeeping so interesting. She lives in Cumbria beside a Pollinator Nature Reserve that she and her husband run.

Julia and Martin run a small 'not for profit' business, 'Bee Ed' to teach anyone who is interested about pollinators; the 17 acre nature reserve is managed as flower rich meadow and pasture with bee appropriate woodland. All money raised from courses & talks is used to run the Nature Reserve.

We run: - beekeeping courses in Brigsteer and for other Beekeeping Associations, 'meet the bees days, bee identification days and we work to interest young people and the public in the environment especially pollinator issues, we visit schools and young people's organisations and we support schools who wish to keep honey bees. We are associate tutors for the Field Studies Council and run courses for them and we work with volunteers and staff in wildlife organisations to teach about bees, how to identify them and how to manage land to support pollinators. Julia has given webinars for Cumbria Wildlife Trust to support their initiative 'Get Cumbria Buzzing' and zoomed lots of talks. Information about us is on our website www.BeeEd.org.uk

We both belong to Kendal and South Westmorland Beekeepers' Association, Julia is the education officer, Martin is the chairperson. We have the beekeeping equipment supply business in South Cumbria. 'In another life' Julia was a GP in Kendal, she currently works for the National Bee Unit.
